teeheeheehee d'oh. The perils of writing about THE FUTURE.

This particular book came out in 1998, so she was writing this a little too early for Napster and portable MP3 players - but there were already, like, MP3s. And there'd been MIDIs and, you know, crappy Casio keyboards that played those when you pressed the "auto" button for years! I don't think the eventual obsolescence of the CD player was a hard prediction!

Yeah, I don't know if I would have guessed mp3 reliance in 1998, but I would have made up some kind of CD replacement! :P

In this specific book there's a guy who's an expert in steam-powered engines, who's trying really hard to invent the car, and he is able to figure out and repair the broken CD player in less than eight hours! Also, though the CD player is hundreds of years old, when it broke, it was because the battery had died! CD PLAYERS DON'T LAST VERY LONG, OKAY, THEY'VE GOT TINY FRAGILE MOVING PARTS

And they only just started the industrial revolution, but people use the word "electronics." And the heroine finds an ancient tome about space travel, and it uses the word "genetics," and she understands this.

So, uh, this is not exactly the Steerswoman series.
