The first book was so cute! But I just read Murder on the Ballarat Train, and a pedophile hypnotist with magical eyes was defeated by a voodoo priest stereotype. And a kitten, which somehow launched itself at him with enough leverage to scratch his eyes out, so I guess the kitten was also magical. This stuff was kind of abrupt.
I don't think that the author knew who'd committed the titular murder until Phryne did, and that was very late in the book.
