Jan. 22nd, 2013 08:23 pmIt's weird when the TVTropes article for something comes before the thing itself in Google.
The TVTropes for Brainbent appears to be kind of in denial: Aradia is called Sollux's "Living Emotional Crutch." Nowhere else on the page does it acknowledge that she's obviously dead, and Sollux's conversations with her hallucinatory.
Yeah, obviously this made me cry when I noticed it.

Date: 2013-01-23 02:16 am (UTC)On the one hand it seems possible - on the other hand I wouldn't expect a hallucination to be having this sort of realistic, pragmatic caretaker fatigue conversation, and given the various dramatic differences in this 'verse my base assumption was that the conversation was basically the punch-line to a fakeout WRT Aradia's mortality status. Am I missing something?

Date: 2013-01-23 03:44 am (UTC)* This post in its entirety. It seems pretty clear to me.
* Sollux says that Aradia comes every day, but no one but Sollux is ever shown interacting with her, and Dave and Karkat have never seen her. Equius says that she was there every day when he was admitted for the first time, but that appears to have been at least a year ago. Gamzee can't remember having seen her for a long time. Latula refers to their interactions in the past tense, and regarding her and Sollux, VastDerp said: "They knew each other mainly through Aradia, and haven’t kept in touch." He's never canonized any fanfic mentioning what Aradia's doing in the present or recent past.
* When Karkat hassles Sollux about Aradia, the thing that sets him off is Karkat asking whether he would give up on life if he never saw her again.
* VastDerp tends to draw her in slightly physics-defying ways, with her hair floating up in the air or clothes curling oddly, or haloed with light. The only other character who gets this treatment is John, when he's shown doing the windy thing in his godhood, implying that there's something unreal or symbolic about her presence.
* When asked what they would do with one wish just before they died, Sollux and Aradia answer as one person, asking for "another chance." Sollux answers all questions directed to Aradia, and speaks with Aradia's quirk when he's in very bad shape; he doesn't seem to talk to her on his good days, either.
* Aradia's job in Homestuck is to be the dead girl who remains an active presence in the world. This is also her function in VastDerp's other lengthy Homestuck fanfic, One Of Our Submarines.
