City of Diamond is three or four levels more complex than Ivory, anyway - it's essentially the first two seasons of a sci-fi series too good to get renewed for a second season. Egan may well have been trying to replicate the experience in prose, given that it ends on a slight cliffhanger, and she's said there will be no sequels.
