You are supposedly able to do this in the MS Office product suite too.
The second thing you mention sounds like what used to be called a "mail merge" - the classical application was that you had one word processing document that was a list of addresses formatted in some specific way and a second document that was a letter template. You ran "mail merge" to get a batch of letters, one per address, with the addresses embedded in them in the appropriate spot.
