I turned on the crappy one I've been using, then got distracted by the dogs or something and forgot about it. Forty-five minutes later, I noticed that the little light was still on - upon approaching the kettle, I found that all the water had boiled away, and the heating element was still on.

Today's lesson: The crappy kettle does not turn off automatically, and also does not make any noise.
