A problematic sign.
Oct. 25th, 2011 08:30 pmToday I was driving along the four-lane with Dad, in the left lane, and approached two pickup trucks in the right. They were full of what appeared to be sorted garbage. There was a stack of small wood scraps that didn't seem to be secured, and I had about a second to look at it and say, "Uh-oh, that doesn't look safe," before a piece of plywood came flying at us.
It was very small, and doesn't seem to have actually hit the car. Naturally, though, I chose to pass this truck with some alacrity. As I was doing this, I noticed a hand-stenciled sign on the back of the second truck in front of it. It said,
"STAY BACK 500 FT
NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR FLYING DEBRIS"
I said, "Dad, how do you feel about that legal argument?"
Dad said, "Sure! And I'll just put up a sign that says,
"NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HOWEVER IRRESPONSIBLY I MAY CHOOSE TO DRIVE
YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN""
Free legal advice for you, idiots in trucks. Your sign does not hold up under scrutiny.
(Yes, we probably should have called 911 about this; I would have if it had looked like they had anything large back there, but it was all very small things.)
