I am uncertain that I would be able to recognize myself any longer were I to change my user icon. I have been using the same one for about seven years.
I would be very confused if you changed your icon!
What's even more confusing is when someone starts using an icon similar to one I associate with another person. There's a person who used to use an icon of Killua from Hunter x Hunter, but changed it a while ago; now I'll occasionally see someone else posting with a Killua icon and go, "oh, I haven't seen Killua posting in a while!"
Note that Person #1 didn't actually stop posting! They just changed their icon. This seems enough to convince some part of my brain that they are now a different person.
I wonder if using a different icon when I'm complaining about something than when I'm sqeeing about something would make people react differently to posts/comments using each. Like, I start using a Sugar Sugar Rune icon when I'm being an angry feminist, thus training THE PATRIARCHY to go on the defensive immediately when they see my Sugar Sugar Rune icon.
I suspect that my online identity is becoming tied to my tiny grumpy big-eyed red person, though! Even when I've thought about changing my icon, it's always been to another tiny grumpy big-eyed person.
...I just realized that my default icon before this one was tiny grumpy girl!Ranma during a plotline where Ranma and Ryouga turned into little kids, so maybe I've always been like this.
I actually kinda know the feeling. Although I habitually use dozens of icons, I've had this one as a default so long that it actually reminds me of myself.
(See, this is my problem. It's just obvious to me that you are the person hanging up the pink socks, and therefore any comment you make on the subject must pertain to a new and unique incident of pinkness.
It's like when somebody dies in Bleach. They're all already dead! So it must be special death.)

Would bleach help any of it, you think? (I guess there was something red in there?)
(Last year I cleverly turned my arms and the floor of the bathroom pink using a 420-yen used yukata as a bathrobe.)
