And they only just started the industrial revolution, but people use the word "electronics." And the heroine finds an ancient tome about space travel, and it uses the word "genetics," and she understands this.
So, uh, this is not exactly the Steerswoman series.

In this specific book there's a guy who's an expert in steam-powered engines, who's trying really hard to invent the car, and he is able to figure out and repair the broken CD player in less than eight hours! Also, though the CD player is hundreds of years old, when it broke, it was because the battery had died! CD PLAYERS DON'T LAST VERY LONG, OKAY, THEY'VE GOT TINY FRAGILE MOVING PARTS
