Oh, Lovecraft. I think his protagonists are blank slates for the world to act upon, if that makes sense. And yes, he is horribly, horribly offensive in his characterizations of nonwhite people (as well as women and anyone Jewish of any skin color, or basically anyone not an able-bodied white dude).
