From what I remember, Ikuhara has said he doesn't mind writing m/f romances -- he just doesn't like how they tend to overwhelm other elements of a show, especially in shoujo anime. (And while he was directing Sailormoon, tried to kill off Tuxedo Mask all the time, but they kept bringing him back anyway.)
