Savvy consumer = I only barely caught myself before sending these people a third check.
Operator: [Something] Billing, may I help you?
Me: Well, I got this bill from you guys for $30, and I'm looking at my bank records, and I've actually already paid you $30 twice. I mean, you've cashed both the checks.
Operator: Yes, our records show that we owe you a $30 refund.
Me: ...uh. Okay, so...
Operator: You'll be getting that next month.
Me: All right. But why was I sent another bill? Because this just went out a couple days ago.
Operator: Do you see a little minus sign next to the $30?
Me: ...yes.
Operator: That means we owe you money. That's a credit.
Me: ...It asks for money. There's an envelope in there to send a check in.
Operator, firmly: The minus sign means it's a credit, not a charge.
Me: - I mean - I don't know if you guys realize this, but that's really not going to be obvious to anyone.
Operator: Yeah, well, that's what it means.
Me: Okay, thanks.
