Aside from the horrible imagery, what's bugging me is that his motivations - however deranged the extremes he took them to - seemed to be basically pretty pure earlier on. He was portrayed as being fairly responsible and thoughtful. Like, I would not let any of the other shinigami watch a baby, but I might let Tousen. His characterization this way has been pretty consistent, I think, even through the parts of the Arrancar arc that forgot he was blind. It's really gratuitous to change his personality entirely like this - there's just no good reason to do it.
