(Also because I think it really is a lot like Song for the Basilisk, which has already been written. The thing that's most obviously ripped is the whole bit where the lost heir to the throne gets middle-aged and starts a family and develops other interests and is kind of unsuitable for the job. I love that storyline so much.
Also, the setting as I saw it when I dozed off was basically the Hinterlands from the book, and the witch was the old fortune-teller with the bowl. Though now that I'm awake, I've decided it's in India.)
