Date: 2009-07-01 02:53 pm (UTC)I think Damia only brain-damages the guy she sleeps with, but it's entirely possible that she killed him and I just blocked it out. I do remember that her parents cover it up, because that's what parents are for in Anne McCaffrey. There were many, many problems with the whole psychics series, but I think the romances in Damia pretty much take the cake. If I remember correctly, the husband only ever slept with high-priced prostitutes before Damia. Because all his emotional energy went into his unrequited love for her mom.
I've never actually read anything by Scarborough working alone, but I did like most of the bits that seemed to be hers in Powers That Be. I particularly appreciated the relationships between the female characters, and how the romance didn't suddenly dissolve them all. I'm a little bugged by the treatment of some Inuit characters, which involved Froofy Wise Nature-Worship.
I might read some more of Singh's stuff, because I'm self-destructive that way, but this book is just not encouraging to me.
